Snow Leopard

Uncia uncia

Having the thickest coat of any cat helps the Snow Leopard survive fierce winds and extremes of heat and cold in the remote highlands of Central Asia. They also have the longest tail of all cats, which they use as a balance, a rudder, a blanket and even as a baby-minder.

After a long settling-in period for our two Snow Leopards, Leon and Samarra, Taronga was proud to announce the birth of two beautiful Snow Leopard cubs in October 2005. Leon, who arrived from Germany, was at first frightened of Samarra, who in turn was shy in her new surroundings after arriving here from France. Careful introductions and lots of patience have been rewarded and the cubs are now on display with their parents.
