Andean Condor

Vultur gryphus

These magnificent birds live in mountainous areas and soar to altitudes of 6000 metres. With a wingspan of over 3 metres, they are among the largest flying birds of prey in the world. Their appearance is awesome with no feathers on their face but this actually helps them to stay clean after a meal.

In early 2002, Taronga Zoo's Andean Condors Bruce and Connie produced an egg which was successfully hatched and hand reared by keepers. This is the first young Andean Condor Australia has seen for many years.

"Leslie", our 4 year old Andean Condor, is a recent addition to the team at the spectacular Free Flight Bird Show.
