Taronga's Sun Bears were rescued from the restaurant trade in Cambodia in 1997 by Australian businessman John Stevens.
Elephas maximus
Elephants are the world's largest land animal and have formed special bonds with man throughout history. The elephant's characteristic trunk is a vital organ used for everything from giving a hug to a snorkel while swimming. As well as trumpeting, elephants have a secret, low frequency, infra-sonic language inaudible to humans. Western Plains Zoo has one female Asian Elephant, Burma, who originally came from a circus.
